Maximizing Fuel Efficiency Using Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

HERE Mapping Resources location data usageThe Eurofot consortium publishes the results of a four-year study on the impact of driver assistance systems in Europe like the location data usage. The European Operational Review (Eurofot) project started in June 2008 and included 28 companies and organizations, Safer Chalmers Research Center is one of them. The study investigated existing technologies and their potential to improve safety and reduce environmental pollution. Eurofot also demonstrated a link between these advanced driver assistance systems and improvements in driver behavior, energy efficiency and road safety and energy saved.

Over 90 percent of the accidents in the European Union are due to the behavior of the driver. Supporting technologies for the driver, such as those that have been tested in Eurofot, can have a positive impact on driving behavior and improve our understanding of potential to affect traffic safety, efficiency and traffic environment. For more than twelve months, more than a thousand cars and trucks equipped with systems traveled European roads and for most of them, at every opportunity, acceleration and lane changes, their movements were monitored and recorded. The field test focuses on eight different vehicle functions that help drivers recognize hazards and avoid accidents: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Advanced Collision Warning (FCW), Speed ​​Control System (SRS), BLIS (blind spot information system) Warning (LDW) Curve speed warning (CSW), man / machine safe and efficient fuel advisor (FEA).

Vehicles with two systems could affect up to 5.7 percent of accidents with injured persons on highways, could affect trucks up to 0.6 per cent of these accidents. EuroFOT findings found that ACC and FCW in passenger cars could have a positive effect on the overall accident statistics for all types of traffic. They could also identify positive indirect effects on transport efficiency. Due to the possible reduction of accidents, calculated vehicle hours each year accessory delay lost could be reduced by more than three million hours. The environmental impact, measured in terms of fuel consumption, showed a reduction of about three percent for passenger cars and two percent for trucks, without taking into account the benefits of changes in the efficiency of transport. Drivers who participated in the study also noted that ACC and FCW was a very appreciated and used function, and drivers felt more safe. They were collected and analyzed over a hundred terabytes of data that were the basis for the consortium Eurofot to assess the impact of using location data on our roads.

The investigated systems of Eurofot could reduce accidents and resources, having a wide influence on the socio-economic impact. Socio-economic assessment shows, in relation to trucks, an advantage of 01.03 to 01.08 costs for CCA.  With the aid of the ACC and FCW systems for passenger cars and trucks, Eurofot determines that the equipment costs for vehicles and heavy trucks significant annual savings.
